At the end of the Cold War, a new concept of security - Cooperative Security Concept - developed within contemporary security studies, and it represented a new approach to achieving, preserving and enhancing security. Based on theoretical discussions regarding the concept, value and other aspects of cooperative security, the paper analyses the development of the model of cooperative security within the European Union (EU) through the gradual establishment of mutual trust as the key prerequisite for the implementation of this concept. The paper points out that, in the multipolar 21st century, the EU sets a unique example of cooperative security based on genuine trust as the highest instance of cooperation. The institutionalization of cooperation in the EU has been presented by offering an insight into the idea and concept of cooperative security and an analysis of key processes for establishing and promoting cooperation.en
